MEChistAs gather in Sin City
MEChistAs from all over Aztlan gathered this weekend in Sin City (Las Vegas) for the National Liaison on October 1st hosted by MEChA de UNLV. MEChistAs gathered to plan the 2006 National MEChA Conference being hosted by the Centro Aztlan region at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona from March 23rd to 26th.
Eight of the ten regions were present this weekend. Chapters from Alta Califas Norte, Alta Califas Sur, Calpulli Montanas, Centro Aztlan, Centro Califaztlan, Mictlampa Cihuatlampa, Pacific Northwest, and Tierra Mid-Atl were represented; not present were Este Aztlan and Southeast Tejaztlan regions.
Centro Aztlan presented all the information regarding the current status of their conference organizing efforts and requested suggestions for the content. They said that conference information will soon be posted online. The website for the information will be: http://www.nau.edu/mecha/.
The National MEChA Coordinating Council also met to work on the national homework assigned to them at the last national resolution circle from the 2005 National Conference at CSU Northridge.
Male NMCC co-chair, Emmanuelle Leal of Calpulli Montanas, stated the NMCC meeting was very productive. Emmanuelle added that all the NMCC representatives have been assigned specific tasks. He will be taking charge of holding the NMCC representatives accountable for achieving their respective tasks.
There were some announcements made regarding the composition of the council. Norma Gutierrez,the female representative from Alta Califas Norte, had to resign due to her job. The position is currently vacant. Juan Villalobos of Rio Hondo Community College was announced as the new male representative from Alta Califas Sur, replacing Erik Iniguez that was forced to resign due to a transfer of schools.
The next National Liaison and NMCC meeting will be taking place in the Pacific Northwest MEChA Region at the University of Washington in Seattle on November 12, 2005.
